In reply to your despatch No.189 of the 20th of July, I have the honour to inform you that no claim has
been made here by the Nestlé and Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk
Co. for compensation for losses incurred as a result of the
piratical attack on the S.S."Tai On" in April last, nor has
any such claim been made by any other party not being a
member of the crew of the ill-fated vessel.
I concur in the view expressed by Sir E. Grey
that in this case no claim for compensation would lie against
the Chinese Government.
